Sony Ericsson SDK 2.5.0.4 Description
Sony Ericsson uses a platform approach to Java implementation allowing developers to focus on a platform rather than on a variety of different product names.
Sony Ericsson uses a platform approach to Java implementation allowing developers to focus on a platform rather than on a variety of different product names. Two platform branches exist, supporting Symbian (SJP) and non-Symbian (JP) based phones respectively.
The platforms are implemented through an evolutionary approach in order to ensure forwards compatibility between platform versions. Normally each platform version is used in several phone models.
I have a Sony Ericsson phone that I wish to use with the SDK. What do I need in order to connect to the phone?
First, you need to install the USB drivers for your phone. These are installed together with the PC Suite for your phone. Next you need to find out which Java Platform version your phone supports. Next, you may need to open the Connection Proxy depending on which JP-version your phone has and how you have configured the SDK.
The Connection Proxy sets up a proxy (i.e., a bridge) between the phone and the PC tools (e.g., Device Explorer). For all phones supporting JP-7 and earlier, we use a COM port (or a virtual COM port over USB) for communications and for JP-8 and later we use TCP/IP over the USB emulated ethernet interface (the interface with the name starting with Sony Ericsson Device). These differences are hidden from the tools so that the only difference in connectivity exists in the Connection Proxy.
If it is JP-7 or earlier, you need to connect it to the PC using your USB (or serial) cable, open the Connection Proxy and press Connect.
For JP-8 devices the Connection Proxy should connect automatically once the device is available and correctly configured. Depending on how fast your phone is and how much CPU is available at the time, the delay between connecting the phone with USB cable and when the Connection Proxy can connect may vary. In most cases however, the connection should complete within 5-10 seconds. If no connection happens within 1 minute, check the rest of the tips below.
Also, for JP-8 devices you need to activate Java Developer Mode before you can connect. This is done by entering the hidden Services menu by pressing the following key combination: Right Star Left Left Star Left Star. Enter the Service settings menu, then the Java-development mode menu and change the setting to On. Reconnect the phone and the Connection Proxy should connect successfully.
I have a JP-7 (or earlier) phone and I can't connect with the Connection PRoxy. What should I do?
For JP-7 phones the connection should be made over the first COM-port created when you connect the phone to the PC using the cable. Open the settings dialog in the Connection Proxy (yellow cogwheel) and select the correct COM port. Try connecting again and if it doesn't work, please post an issue on the developer forums for the SDK.
